Church History
Blue Mountain Memorial Brethren in Christ Church (previously known as Mt. Tabor Church) was built in 1876 by the United Brethren In Christ. The church was closed in the mid 1950′s due to a variety of reasons. On June 5, 1960, the church was purchased for $200 by Frank F. Baldwin of the Bible Missionary Church and reopened. Special services and revival meetings were held at the church on an intermittent basis. in the late 1970′s the church was sold to a local community couple who intended to remodel the church into a “summer home”.
Before that could happen, a local businessman by the name of William Holtry discovered the vacant church. he was so burdened to see it reopened that he went seeking the assistance of his pastor and fellow church members. Together, William, his wife Mae, along with certain other interested individuals from the Mowersville Brethren In Christ Church set themselves to the task of reopening this house dedicated to God’s use. many repairs had to be made to the church before it could be used again. Trees were even growing in the windows! But God was working out His eternal plan for this church to be a lighthouse shining forth the Gospel. The opening day with Sunday school was held on May 24, 1981. God moved in the hearts of William and Mae Holtry to continue serving at the church as a bi-vocational pastor and wife. Ten years later, God placed another burden on Pastor Holtry’s heart. This time it was the vision of added facilities to accommodate the growth and outreach of the church within/around it’s community. This vision included a new sanctuary, pastor’s study, library, nursery, bathrooms (to take the place of the outhouses), and a family life center! Today, 28 years later, after overcoming many “mountains” that visions has been fulfilled. We want to give thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ and every person who has had a part in making this vision possible!
